About

|
As part of ASV’s continuing effort to support the development of the virology workforce and encourage interaction at all levels of virology experience, the society dedicates a significant portion of funding towards travel awards. Travel awards are intended to defray some of the costs associated with travel to the meeting, thereby increasing the ability of more trainees to attend the annual gathering and have the opportunity to present their work in a supportive and rigorous environment.
While the goal of the society is to provide travel grants to a large number of trainee applicants, travel awards are competitive. The exact number of travel grants available each year is decided by the ASV council, which oversees society’s finances. Awards are offered based on abstract review, which is carried out by the travel award committee. The committee ranks abstracts from submitted travel grant applications. Abstracts are ranked based on a combination of factors that include scientific merit, number of previous ASV travel awards, and demographic factors. Trainees are defined as undergraduate students, graduate students, postbaccalaureate, postdocs, and those temporarily working in a laboratory between degrees.
